Jamie has always had a passion for exercise and understanding its effects on the human body.
After several years of working in the medical community as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and as Medical Fitness Director, she joined the Exercise Physiology & Countermeasures Project at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2008 as an Exercise Scientist.
Jamie is part of a team who research the effects of both short- and long-term space flight on human physiology, as it relates to bone, muscle, and the cardiovascular system. Specifically, the team investigates how exposure to microgravity and reduced gravities affect human performance. In addition to researching the effects of space flight on exercise physiology, the group also works on the development of new exercise countermeasures to mitigate those effects. The team also helps in the development and evaluation of new exercise countermeasure hardware, such as the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED), that is currently in use on board the International Space Station.
So how did such a big space nerd develop an interest in MovNat? Easy. As an Exercise Scientist, Jamie fully understands the value and tremendous benefit that can be gained by moving naturally, just as nature intended!
Jamie’s education includes a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science/Wellness and a Master’s in Health & Physical Education. She is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a trained Health & Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches. She is a member of several professional organizations including the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), and the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA). Jamie is currently working on a Master’s in Health Studies at the University of Alabama, with plans to later pursue a dual-degree program at the University of Texas Medical Branch leading to a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). She also holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).
Jamie enjoys reading, geocaching, hiking, watersports, riding motorcycles, strength training, Tae Kwon Do and Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
Advice from Jamie: “Find your passion and follow it. Dream big. Set goals and enjoy the journey of achieving them. Always live life with the mindset that you don’t want to look back on your life one day and wonder ‘what if?’”
